Fashion Show at Ava Laurenne

The bridal boutique Ava Laurenne Bridal is hosting a designer weekend and  fashion show with Jose Dias, designer for Justin Alexander gowns. He will be in the shop all day Friday March 15 and Saturday March 16 to consult with brides about gowns for their special day. Do not miss this event!!!

I have designed 3 bouquets for the models to carry during the show. I did bouquets of carnations and feathers. Yes, CARNATIONS!!!! Most of you know, if you've read my web site, I train in New York every year, and I am here to tell you that carnations are back!!!!!! Growers have reintroduced the wonderful clove scent of the carnations of the 1600's and the fullness and fluff and fabulous colors of that time when carnations were revered and only second to the rose (I mean OLD rose) in popularity!!! Shhhhhh! Don't tell anyone, because the prices have not caught with the renewed popularity of this flower!!!!! So all you conscientious girls watching your budget in this economy, please consider the carnation and know that you will be on the cutting edge of floral design. (I promise, this will trickle down to us soon!) Just take a look on Pinterest!

At any rate, I had fun with these cute, edgy bouquets!

Floral Workshop Guest Designer

I will be appearing as a guest designer at Betsy Valentine's floral workshop in Fredericksburg, Va. on March 15. I'll be designing a St. Patrick's Day arrangement using, of course, mostly green flowers. It's appropriate for two reasons: 1) St. Patrick's Day is all about green, and 2) the 2013 Pantone color of the year is Emerald Green. See the information below:

Please join me for a workshop to create a St. Patrick’s Day arrangement

March 15 or 16 – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon both days.

Designing for Holy Spaces, National Cathedral, Washington, DC

I had the honor and priviledge of attending a floral design workshop at the National Cathdral in Washington, DC this last Tuesday and Thursday. I signed up for it to learn more about mechanics and designs to use at St. George's Episcopal Church where I am a member and the Co-chair of the Flower Guild. (The other co-chair does all the hard work of keeping us organized and scheduling all the activities for which the Flower Guild is needed. I just help with the designs for major holidays, come up with the recipes, and place the order for the flowers. That is the easy work, and I love it, too.

At the workshop entitled Designing for Holy Spaces, I did indeed learn about mechanics, and I saw fabulous designs demonstrated, which I would love to share with our Flower Guild so that we might replicate some of those, but the experience was indescribable. Let me try to share some of that experience. First, the architecture of the Cathedral is as gorgeous as any Cathedral I have visited in Europe. The stained glass windows in the Chapel where we worked, were so beautiful that looking at them took me to another place. When we started the workshop on Tuesday, the choir began to practice next to us. (My husband is a choir member, so I have a huge appreciation for the time, talent, and passion of choir members. I do, however, listen to a lot of the bass parts...Hmmmm!) It was surreal!

However, let me tell you the highlight of this experience. It was the talent and spirit of Linda Roeckelein, the head of the National Cathedral Flower Guild and the members of the Guild who designed, prepared the flowers for us, advised us, swept up after us, and welcomed us into their space. Oh, to have the combined knowledge and talent of these beautiful women......one can dream can't one? One thing I do know is that I'll continue my education about this art form, and I will continue to practice, practice, practice! Anyone wishing to be a better floral designer should do just that PRACTICE!

Finally, to top off the experience, the Dean's wife invited us into their beautiful and historic home for a lovely lunch. It was delicious and offered a great opportunity to get to know some of my fellow classmates! This was one week for the books!!!!!

The following pictures are iPhone pictures, but I hope you can get a feel for the beauty of each design!

Isn't this architecture gorgeous?!

LLinda creating a beautiful Thanksgiving arrangement with dried material!!

A gorgeous garland by Georgia! This picture does not do it justice. It was a work of art! As I said, I could just eat it!

Absolutely, one of my favorite arrangements done by Betsy from no other place, but Birmingham, my home for 30 years! We all agree, there is a style that can be claimed by Birmingham. I remember when I first started arranging flowers in Birmingham, I asked about that style and was told that all the women who were wonderful floral designers, were trained by Sheila McQueen! I think she even came to Birmingham to train this group. I know some went to her school in England. That's how I learned in the beginning of my serious efforts to design floral arrangements.

A beautiful garden design created by Fredericksburg's own talented Marion Zimmermann. I have had the pleasure of working along side Marion, and I cannot tell you the wealth of knowledge she has and so generously shares. She may not realize it, but she has been a wonderful mentor to me. (Thank you Jerry for getting the bark out of the trash! We appreciated your effort!!!)( We must praise our husbands you know!!!! We probably couldn't do it without them! Well, let's say it would be harder.)

Divine design by Sue!

Unbelievable design by Louise!!!!

Thank you Linda and all the volunteers for the magnificent work that you do and for a fabulous workshop that touched me on many, many levels.

New Year - some new decorating by Kelly Banez, Owner of Impressions of Fredericksburg Interiors

Well, as of the New Year, I've completed some redecorating that needed to be done and some that didn't need to be done (my granddog Lab Sawyer?????) Kelly Banez, Owner/Designer of Impressions of Fredericksburg, www.impressint.com, came to my rescue after Sawyer's little escapade in my living room, and after I brought several pieces of furniture back from my mom and dad's house in Alabama. I needed to make them "fit" into my home, because my mother was very traditional and I am not, not, not! I lean to the contemporary/eclectic/minimal/relaxed style. (Is that a style?)

I'll share a few pictures, but I want to give a shout out to Kelly! She knew exactly what I liked and was able to do what Albert Hadley said to a protege, "Give them what they never knew they wanted, Kiddo!" I just love the pops of color that I never knew I wanted.

My library. I love black! We recovered the three chairs - one was mine and two were from my mom's - in a fabulous black fabric to coordinate with my black leather club chair and black chest! The ottomon brought all my neutrals and blacks together!

My living room. I love, love geometrics, and I fell in love with this fabric. I wanted it to still work with my "white" room, but I took a cue from my Brandon Newton painting, "The White Dress." www.brandonnewtonart.com

I love my "dogtrot" hall!

The wooden box on the table was built by my daddy out of wood from a cabin in Alabama that was over 100 years old! The cabin was on some land owned by my brother-in-law. I cherish that box and think of my daddy and my brother-in-law everytime I look at it! Special!!!

The needlepoint pillow canvas was designed for me by my cousin who owns The Needlebug in Montgomery, Alabama. www.theneedlebug.com.  Leigh also had the pillow made for me after I finished needlepointing it. (I will not tell you how long it took me to finish that pillow, but I know it gave me arthritis in my thumbs!) If you are ever in Montgomery, you must visit The Needlebug and tell Leigh I sent you! Oh yes, Leigh's house inspired me and I asked her if I could "build her house." Sweet cousin.........

The bench cushion is made from antique grain sacks. Robert Weymouth recovered it! Robert Weymouth Upholstery is the best!!!!!!

Two of my den chairs needed recovering, and I absolutely fell madly in love with this fabric!!! I love the gradation of color!!!!!!

Thank you, Kelly for guiding me all along the way, and for your great eye for style, beauty, and function!!!! And, thank you for meeting me in between flower deliveries, bridal meetings, and weddings. Love and appreciate your flexibility, too!!!!
